About

Yuzu was first launched in 2018 by the developers behind Tropic Haze LLC, the same team responsible for the popular Nintendo 3DS emulator, Citra. At the heart of Yuzu’s early development was a key contributor known as “bunnei.” Since many of the original developers had also worked on Citra, the two emulators shared foundational code and structural similarities.

Over time, Yuzu gained widespread attention, evolving to include powerful features like multiplayer support, improved compatibility with Switch titles, GPU optimizations for NVIDIA and AMD, and game save transfers. As an open-source project built with C++ and licensed under GPLv2, Yuzu encouraged community involvement and collaboration. It supported Windows, Linux, and Android, making it one of the most accessible and widely used Nintendo Switch emulators available.

Unfortunately, in March 2024, the Yuzu project was officially discontinued following a lawsuit filed by Nintendo. Tropic Haze LLC reached a $2.4 million settlement, and the official repositories and development ceased immediately.

Following the takedown, a group of developers forked the original source code and launched a new project called Suyu, continuing development independently under new goals and direction.
